Selfridges has become the latest company to stop supplying Kopi Luwak, an Indonesian coffee collected from the excrement of the Civet cat. Readers of this blog will be aware of my opinion of Kopi Luwak but worst of all have been the cases of animal abuse surrounding the production of this coffee. It is of course important to point out that not all Kopi Luwak producers will be force feeding the cats and there will be those farmers who process the coffee properly. Unfortunately there is no way of making certain. There is no certification assuring the healthy treatment of the animals and there is no way of easily telling whether coffee from a different farm, with poor animal welfare standards, has been added.
It has now got to the point where the Indonesian government is going to have to act if they are going to save this industry. A root and branch investigation of Kopi Luwak producers as well as a certification system is going to have to happen if they want people to continue to buy this product.
We always say here at Beans Ahoy, learn about your coffee and where it comes from.
