I had to do a double take when I read that. Vietnam is not only a country that is quite difficult to do business in, but it’s also inundated with coffee. Thing is though, it’s not very good coffee. They have a huge production of robusta so strong it can make your eyeballs pulsate. The coffee in Vietnam is also traditionally served on the sides of streets, or in run down shacks, so it’s going to be very interesting to see what Starbucks makes of the local market.
I wouldn’t underestimate Starbucks though. They sell more than coffee, opting for a whole lifestyle type experience, and I think the growing middle class in Vietnam will clamber to get a shot of the Starbucks experience. Many of the relics of communism in Vietnam are gone and replaced with a vibrant and commercial orientated attitude to living.
